RTMS may be an asset against Alzheimer’s Disease
At the Montreal Neurotherapy Center, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (RTMS) is one of the technologies we have been using for many years.
In addition to its application in Alzheimer’s disease, we use it for several other conditions such as:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Tinnitus
- Post-concussion symptoms
- Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD, “PTSD”)
- Neuropathic pain
This non-invasive therapy is easy to administer safely and painlessly. rTMS therapy has been approved by Health Canada for clinical administration in Canada.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation rTMS is a procedure in which electrical cerebral activity is influenced by a pulsed magnetic field. The magnetic field that is generated by rTMS can penetrate the scalp and skull to induce a current in specific regions of the brain.
In this way, we can regulate the flow of interactions between neurones that will increase or decrease appropriately the desired regions to relieve the symptoms in a durable and drug-free manner.
RTMS may be an asset against Alzheimer’s disease (In french only)
Zahra Moussavi, a researcher at the University of Manitoba, had already begun research several years ago to see the effectiveness of rTMS in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
Regardless a small sampling of data she had noticed a considerable improvement for patients in early Alzheimer’s and a non-conclusive effect for those in the advanced stage. Despite the promising results, the project was abandoned for lack of funding.
Fortunately for people suffering from this terrible disease, Zahra has received $ 1.7 million from the Weston Brain Institute to continue the research.
